Golf on Costa del Sol
The Spanish sunshine coast is also known as the Costa del Golf and looking at the number of golf courses down there, you’ll quickly see why. There are almost 70 golf courses within a radius of a few miles. Unlike sun and beach tourism, the Costa del Sol is not primarily visited during the summer, but golfers flock here in the spring and autumn in particular, but also during the winter, when the climate is still pleasant enough for a round of golf. The courses are generally very well maintained and of a very high quality.
The region has become a popular destination for golf enthusiasts from all over the world due to its excellent weather, stunning scenery, and well-maintained courses.
One of the most famous golf courses in Costa del Sol is the Valderrama Golf Club. This exclusive course has hosted the Ryder Cup and the Volvo Masters, and is considered one of the best courses in Europe. Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., Valderrama is known for its challenging layout, beautiful greens, and picturesque setting.
Another popular course in the region is the Finca Cortesin Golf Club. This luxurious course offers a challenging and beautiful round of golf, with its undulating fairways, well-bunkered greens, and stunning views of the Mediterranean. The course is also home to a five-star hotel and spa, making it the perfect destination for a golf vacation.
The Costa del Sol is also home to many other excellent golf courses, including the Almenara Golf Club, La Reserva Club Sotogrande, and the San Roque Club. These courses offer a diverse range of challenges, from the technical and hilly terrain of Almenara to the more forgiving layout of La Reserva.

Green fee – Prices
The green fee is a bit above a normal Swedish course. If the average green fee is around £35 in the UK, you can expect to pay almost double that on the Costa del Sol during the high season, which includes spring and autumn. The cheapest courses are around £35-40 while the more expensive courses are between £100-200 for 18 holes. A tip for those travelling to the sunshine coast to play golf is to book through companies that help you book tee times such as Golf Service. As the booking companies have agreements with all the golf courses on the sun coast, you also get a discounted green fee. You usually save around 10-20% on the price compared to booking directly with the golf club. Many golf clubs offer something called “early bird” and/or “twilight golf” where you can play for a much lower fee by playing early in the morning or later in the afternoon.

Golf courses on Costa del Sol
There are courses to suit all golfers regardless of ability on the Costa del Sol. What can be said in general about the courses is that many are very hilly so many choose to hire a golf cart. The standard of the courses varies of course and often price and quality follow each other quite well but there are some gems that we will come back to below. You can’t write about golf courses on the Costa del Sol without mentioning Valderrama. One of the most famous golf clubs in Europe that has hosted the Ryder Cup and countless European Tour events. It is a stunning course that is as much a nature experience as a golf experience. The cork oaks that are everywhere provide a respite from the frustration that many average golfers feel when playing the course. For it is difficult, tricky shots on small greens, but above all it is expensive. Prices from £200 and up!
One course that is exceptionally good value for money is Valle Romano, located near Estepona. From the first hole, you can see that the course is an ambitious project where a lot of money has been invested. The greens are exceptionally good and there are plenty of tricky holes where overconfidence is severely punished. The green fee cost about £65 SEK. Another course that is very high class is Santana Golf also known for all the avocado trees that run along many of the course’s holes. It is a fairly flat course and very enjoyable to play. Green fee from about £70. Another course is Los Naranjos, which has almost become a bit of an institution among Swedish golfers. The businessman Percy Nilsson has owned this course and even today it is owned by Swedes. It’s a fairly easy course to play and on some holes you can pick oranges from the orange trees that line the fairways.

Other things to consider
It is much more common in Spain to get around the courses by golf car. Some courses don’t even have golf carts for hire, so it’s golf carts or backpacks. Many golf courses are also very hilly which makes the courses quite difficult to walk. Green fees are often quoted as a package price along with the golf cart, often a bottle of water is also included with the golf cart which is a nice little detail. However, some courses don’t allow you to drive the golf cart on the fairways which makes it take quite a long time to play. Check with the starter what the rules are before you start your round of golf.
The dress code is a bit stricter in Spain, it’s a pique shirt that applies. You are often not allowed to start in a regular t-shirt. It is also not very common that you need to prove your handicap to be allowed to start, but it is still a good idea to bring your handicap certificate as a precaution. Often, a handicap of 28 for men and 36 for women is required. Something that sometimes happens is that there are golf ball vendors on the golf course, and it is illegal to buy from them, so if you are caught, you may be forced off the course. So, to be safe, buy golf balls before the round!
